South Africa has submitted a dossier detailing clear evidence of Israel’s continuous and systematic breaches of the genocide convention. The report, which calls for international condemnation and assistance in its implementation, will be made publicly accessible.
On 29 December 2023, Pretoria filed an application with the ICJ arguing that Israel’s military operations and policies in Gaza constitute acts of genocide against the Palestinian people and violate the Genocide Convention. On January 26, 2024, the ICJ issued an order directing Israel to “take all measures within its power to prevent the commission of all acts” prohibited under the mandate.
This new dossier comes on the heels of South Africa’s Memorial document. Filed in October 2024, it details evidence and legal arguments supporting claims of acts of genocide. While the complete Memorial is not publicly accessible, South Africa’s Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) has released a public dossier containing evidence related to the case.
